When visiting Montessori schools, look for the following:

• Children moving about the classroom, selecting work and activities that are meaningful to them.
• A steady “hum” of activity as children are encouraged to work together and help each other.
• An environment that is clean, organized, and pleasant with live plants, space for movement and work, and aesthetically pleasing artwork and wall décor.
• Areas that offer opportunities for quiet reflection as well as for social exchanges.
• Snack that is available for children to enjoy individually or with a friend throughout the work cycle, rather than at a set time.
• The posted classroom schedule should include an uninterrupted work period of 2 ½ to 3 hours for Primary classes and 1 ½ to 2 hours for Pre-Primary classes.
